Manteau du soir

Indigo silk lamé, oxidized gold bullion, glass moonstone beads

France, c. 1920-1925

A rare Babani manteau du soir from circa 1920-25, crafted in indigo silk chiffon woven with oxidized-gold lamé an embroidered in a stylized floral motif. Cut in an elongated tunic silhouette, it drapes effortlessly with fluidity, fastening with a single moonstone toggle at the neckline and a discreet interior hook and eye closure at the waist. Moonstones set along the hem and beneath the neckline offer a subtle, luminous contrast. An exceptional example of Babani’s refined, exotic modernism.
