An exceptional Maria Monaci Gallenga opera cape (c. 1920-25) features the designers innovative metallic stencil technique on luminous silk velvet, a proprietary process distinct from Fortuny’s that allowed for subtle tonal shifts in the pigment. The textiles dense repetitive border is a masterful revival of Byzantine mosaic and architectural ornament, demonstrating Gallenga’s commitment to recontextualizing historical motifs within a modern silhouette.
