Mariano Fortuny and Henriette Nigrin
Delphos gown
Hand-pleated silk with Murano beads
Italy, c. 1910-1920
More alchemy than atelier, the Delphos gown remains a singular phenomenon in the choreography of fabric and form. Here, Fortuny and Nigrin’s collaboration yields an artifact of tactile light-their patented pleating animating the silk into a surface that contracts, expands, and breathes with the body.
The textile’s depth absorbs and refracts shadow like obsidian-dense yet diaphanous-while the original Murano beads trace either side of the gown like seams, importing weight, rhythm, and a sculptural verticality.
Preserved with its box, the gown evokes a convergence of classical Greece, Symbolist reverie, and Art Nouveau experiment.
